Early Segregation
Segregation started right after the Civil War, when slavery became illegal. During the Reconstruction Era, three laws were added to the Constitution. These abolished slavery, counted African Americans as citizens, and gave them the right to vote. Later, Civil Right laws were passed to help these Amendments. Soon after, the Black Codes came into being and tried to take the rights away in Congress, and it basically worked. In eight years, the Civil Right laws were established, segregation was formed to try and solve the issue.
As said, the Black Codes were created to take the rights away from African Americans. As the South used slavery as an economy, they passed these laws, also called Jim Crow Laws. South Carolina specifically, was one of the states that pushed for these laws to be passed. In total, in the early years of segregation involved them South fighting the protective laws. They tried, and succeeded, in making it impossible for African Americans to fight the laws.
